I have been painting, drawing and exploring my artistic expression for more than 40 years. My recent work is strongly influenced by the coastal landscape near my home. Close observation of my surroundings is evident in my work.
The starting point of all my work begins outdoors in nature. Making quick sketches, taking notes and looking for the shapes, tones and colours that interest me. Back in my studio, using these visual notes ,I start to construct a new image. This process can take days or weeks to complete. I love to explore markmaking and the play of paint on the surface. The shapes and colours become more simplified and abstract. The finished piece can become something far removed from its origin. For me, it is all about the process, rather than focussing on what the final result will be. Olivia Howe .March 2026
